From Melbourne to an International Career in Music

Born in Melbourne in 1954, David Joseph studied Arts at the University of Tasmania before pursuing music studies in Adelaide. His development as a composer eventually led to postgraduate study and a Master of Music from the University of Melbourne. An Australia Council fellowship took him to Spain and Italy in 1982, an experience that became part of the development of his musical language.

His career has included commissions and performances in Australia and Europe. His works have been associated with major Australian orchestras and ensembles as well as the Zagreb Soloists, Collegium Musicum Zürich and Ripieno Kammerorchester in Switzerland.

David later pursued a second professional career in law in rural Victoria, while maintaining his connection with composition. More recent releases through Move Records have brought a substantial selection of his earlier works back into circulation for contemporary audiences.

Featured Work

Dreams: Works for Small Orchestra

Dreams brings together works written between 1986 and 1994, presenting an especially concentrated view of David Joseph’s interest in movement, psychological states and orchestral colour.

The Dream evokes a half-waking awareness in which sensations appear and disappear. The Haunting moves into darker territory, exploring mental anguish and a sense of being overwhelmed, while The Memory considers how experiences of everyday surroundings may be retained and transformed through recollection.

The collection concludes with two scenes from the ballet Pelléas and Mélisande, commissioned by Queensland Ballet in 1994.
